A Meaningful Volunteer Activity

Last weekend, I participated in a volunteer activity organized by our school—we went to a local nursing home to help the elderly. It was a meaningful experience that made me learn a lot. When we arrived at the nursing home, the elderly were very happy to see us. They greeted us with smiles, and some of them held our hands warmly. Our teacher divided us into groups: some groups helped the elderly clean their rooms, some groups chatted with the elderly, and some groups performed programs for them. I was in the group that chatted with the elderly. I sat next to an 80-year-old grandma, who told me stories about her childhood and her life. She talked about how hard life was when she was young, but she also said that she was happy now because she had good care and many people cared about her. I listened carefully and asked her questions, and she was very happy to answer. Some of my classmates sang songs and danced for the elderly, and the nursing home was full of laughter. We also brought some fruits and snacks for the elderly, and we helped them peel fruits and eat snacks. Before we left, the elderly thanked us again and again, and some of them even shed tears. I felt a little sad to leave, but I was also very happy because I could help them. This volunteer activity taught me to care about the elderly and to be grateful for my own life. It made me realize that a small act of kindness can bring a lot of happiness to others. I will continue to participate in volunteer activities in the future, and I hope to help more people in need.
